Maya Bay is one of the most iconic places to explore. This stunning Maya Bay became a major tourist attraction after the film.
Maya bay was the centerpiece for the movie “THE BEACH” starring Leonardo Di Caprio, filmed in 2000. This beach has become Thailand’s most popular attraction. On most days you can count on it being overrun with tourists.
The beach looks pretty stunning. Maya bay is sheltered by 100m high cliff on three sides. Inside the bay there are several beaches. The main one is around 200 mts long with silky soft white sand, underwater colourful coral and exotic fish in exceptionally clear water the whole bay is one big reef.
This bay is so beautiful and well known. Many boats are required to ferry all the visitors in and out. On any given day at any time there will be 30 + speed boats and longtail boats on the beach worth large ferry boats carrying hundreds of snorkelers and sightseers more in deeper water. Thousands of people visit each day.Visitors should arrive early in the morning to avoid the larger part of the crowd.
Whatever is your reason for visiting this gorgeous bay, there’s quite a few things you need to know before you arrive.
Maya Bay; A very busy tourist place: This means that you’ll likely be sharing the bay with hundreds of others and a bay filled with speedboats. This isn’t always the idyllic image we have about visiting the bay but it’s the very real reality of visiting a popular destination and something to bear in mind before planning your visit.
Pack plenty of water: Don’t expect any shop to sell food or drinks once you get to the island. Make sure you pack at least 2 litres of water if you are planning on swimming /walking in the humid conditions.
Snorkelling: If you are planning on visiting Maya Bay, take some time to snorkel along the shores that are incredible. If you are an inexperienced snorkeler make sure you stay close to the boat, grab a life jacket and always stay within plain sight of the boat crew. Snorkelling is excellent throughout the bay, large underwater boulders are encrusted with coral and brightly coloured fish are numerous. Many tour companies bring visitors here to snorkel from Phuket, Kabul and Phi Phi don
Facilities in Maya Bay: A small shack, away from the beach sells drinks and snacks. There is no food available here. Fires wood is not allowed, but there is a permanent barbeque stand for cooking.
Sea Kayaking in Maya Bay: Sea Kayaking is also popular. Kayaking tour boats come into the bay and mapper while letting clients explore.
After the dark the waters come alive. It is not safe to visit the beach at night, but there are a few boats that have access to the waters of Maya Bay after sunset. Some tours even have option for overnight, so you can sleep in the bay and have it to yourself. Of course this tour is expensive but if you want to avoid the crowd it could be worth it.
